Get yourselves ready because Sweeney Todd is returning to the stage this spring. The outstanding musical thriller is known as Stephen Sondheim’s most remarkable work. The devilish plot paired with the hauntingly beautiful tunes makes it the perfect Broadway musical. It first appeared on Broadway in 1979, and the story and music remains one of the most powerful scores today. Some of the most unforgettable songs from the production include “Johanna,” “Not While I’m Around,” and “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd.”

Sondheim is the mastermind behind the musical. He was inspired after seeing British actor Christopher Bond's play about the Victorian era murderer Sweeney Todd. He has said it is "a dark operetta," but also named it "a movie for the stage." It is almost completely underscored: 80% of the show is sung, and Sondheim's tunes play consistently in the background.

The premise follows a hellbent barber who takes on a path to revenge in London’s 19th century. In this Broadway revival, Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford star as the murderous haircutter and his infatuated sidekick, Mrs. Lovett. Lost in her infatuation with Sweeney, Mrs. Lovett bakes Sweeney Todd’s victims into meat pies for innocent customers. The distinctive musical thriller is mostly sung-through and includes both haunting sounds and bouncy tunes.

Alas! Broadway audiences will witness Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece in its entirety - complete with Jonathan Tunick's iconic 26-player orchestration - for the first time since 1980.
