Brace yourselves because Sweeney Todd is returning to the stage in an upcoming Broadway revival. The unforgettable musical thriller made itself known as Stephen Sondheim’s greatest work. The riveting plot paired with the hauntingly beautiful tunes makes it a fantastic Broadway show. It first appeared on Broadway in 1979, and the story and music remains one of the most powerful scores today. Some of the most notable tracks from the show include “Johanna,” “Not While I’m Around,” and “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd.”
Sondheim is the mastermind behind the musical. The thought of it came after seeing British actor Christopher Bond's play about the old-time serial killer Sweeney Todd. He calls it "a dark operetta," but also defined it "a movie for the stage." It is almost completely underscored: it is sung for over 80% of the show, and Sondheim's tunes play consistently in the background.
The premise follows a hellbent barber who gets sucked into the darkness of revenge in 19th-century London. Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford will star alongside each other as the barbaric barber and his adoring sidekick. Lost in her infatuation with Sweeney, Mrs. Lovett bakes Sweeney Todd’s victims into meat pies for unsuspecting customers. The distinctive musical thriller is mostly sung-through and includes both haunting sounds and bouncy tunes.
Finally!Good news! Broadway audiences will be able to hear Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece in its entirety - complete with Jonathan Tunick's iconic 26-player orchestration - for the first time since 1980.
