Sondheim is the mastermind behind the musical. The idea came after seeing British actor Christopher Bond's play about the 19th-century serial killer Sweeney Todd. He calls it "a dark operetta," but also defined it "a movie for the stage." It is almost completely underscored: 80% of the show is sung, and Sondheim's music play consistently in the background.
The premise follows a hellbent barber who gets sucked into the darkness of revenge in London’s 19th century. In this Broadway revival, Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford star as the murderous haircutter and his infatuated sidekick, Mrs. Lovett. Lost in her infatuation with Sweeney, Mrs. Lovett grinds Sweeney Todd’s victims into meat pies for innocent customers. The unique musical thriller is mostly sung-through and includes both broody tunes and bouncy beats.
