Sondheim came up with the idea for the musical. The idea came after seeing British actor Christopher Bond's play about the 19th-century serial killer Sweeney Todd. He calls it "a dark operetta," but also called it "a movie for the stage." It is almost completely underscored: most of the show is sung, and Sondheim's tunes play consistently behind the action.
The premise follows a hellbent barber who takes on a path to revenge in London’s 19th century. The stars of the show are Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford who will play Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett. Dedicated to helping Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Lovett bakes Sweeney Todd’s victims into meat pies for clueless customers. The distinctive musical thriller is mostly sung-through and includes both dark tunes and upbeat melodies.
