Sondheim came up with the idea for the musical. He was inspired after seeing British actor Christopher Bond's play about the 19th-century serial killer Sweeney Todd. He has said it is "a dark operetta," but also called it "a movie for the stage." It is almost completely underscored: 80% of the show is sung, and Sondheim's music play constantly behind the action.
The premise is about a hellbent barber who takes on a path to revenge in London’s 19th century. Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford will star alongside each other as the barbaric barber and his adoring sidekick. As crazy as she is, Mrs. Lovett bakes Sweeney Todd’s victims into meat pies for unsuspecting customers. The one-of-a-kind musical thriller is mostly sung-through and includes both dark tunes and upbeat melodies.
