“Splendidly sung, profoundly emotional, and oddly amusing. Sondheim’s masterpiece, brought back to its correct proportions, welcomes a eagerly-anticipated comeback to Broadway.” - The New York Times.
Observe the charmingly deranged partnership between the vengeance-seeking Sweeney Todd and the animated shopkeeper Mrs. Lovett. Taking place in the depths of a dark London, this theatrical thriller tells a comical yet darkly Victorian narrative of kin, homicide, class disparity, and questionable little pastry shops.
Guided by the director of Hamilton, Thomas Kail, this renewed music production reintroduces Hugh Wheeler’s honored with a Tony Award book and esteemed composer Stephen Sondheim’s initial music. The production also features the Olivier-winning choreography by Steven Hoggett and other innovative minds, including Mimi Lien (Scenes), Emilio Sosa (Costumes), Natasha Katz (Lighting), Nevin Steinberg (Sound), J. Jared Janas (Wig, Hair & Makeup), and Jeremy Chernick (Special effects).
Thanks to the remarkable 26-piece orchestration by Jonathan Tunick and musical supervision by Alex Lacamoire, spectators can savor new yet true interpretations of Sondheim’s well-known hits such as “A Little Priest,” “Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir” and “The Worst Pies in London.”
During a earlier discussion with principal performer Josh Groban, he reflects on his time playing the role of the main barber.
“… for me the most interesting aspect of Sweeney Todd was the oppositions: the captivating score matched with the sinisterly humorous content, the gloomy storyline. There’s such a juxtaposition of splendor and darkness in the character, combined with some of the most extraordinary music and lyrics ever crafted. It genuinely is nothing short of a masterpiece to perform, irrespective of the genre.”
Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is one of Broadway’s most notable achievements in the history of musicals, consistently praised throughout its diverse incarnations by the Tony, Drama Desk, Olivier, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle award-giving bodies.
