“Splendidly sung, profoundly emotional, and oddly amusing. Sondheim’s masterpiece, brought back to its rightful proportions, greets a long-awaited return to Broadway.” - The New York Times.
Observe the charmingly deranged partnership shared by the retaliatory Sweeney Todd and the lively shopkeeper Mrs. Lovett. Located in the depths of a dark London, this dramatic thriller narrates a amusing yet darkly Victorian story of family, homicide, class disparity, and questionable little pastry shops.
Guided by the director of Hamilton, Thomas Kail, this musical revival welcomes back Hugh Wheeler’s acclaimed with the Tony Award book and esteemed composer Stephen Sondheim’s initial composition. In addition, it incorporates the award-winning choreography by Steven Hoggett and other visionary artists, including Mimi Lien (Scenes), Emilio Sosa (Costumes), Natasha Katz (Lighting), Nevin Steinberg (Sound), J. Jared Janas (Wig, Hair & Makeup), and Jeremy Chernick (Special effects).
Thanks to the impressive 26-piece orchestration by Jonathan Tunick and musical supervision by Alex Lacamoire, audiences can savor new yet faithful interpretations of Sondheim’s well-known hits such as “A Little Priest,” “Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir” and “The Worst Pies in London.”
In a previous conversation with principal performer Josh Groban, he recalls his journey enacting the role of the central barber.
“… for me what intrigued me the most about Sweeney Todd was the contradictions: the lovely score paired with the darkly funny content, the dark storyline. There’s such a juxtaposition of beauty and darkness in the character, combined with many of the most extraordinary music and lyrics ever composed. It genuinely is nothing short of a masterpiece to present, regardless of the type.”
Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is one of Broadway’s most outstanding feats in the history of musicals, continually acclaimed throughout its varied iterations by the Tony, Drama Desk, Olivier, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle award-giving bodies.
